Each subject is matched with the appropriate State and National educational standards.  There is nothing in this class that does not have the potential of being  related or directly covered on the Ohio Graduation Test.

Projects:  There will be several projects during this class that will allow students the opportunity to explore each area in detail.  Many projects will only be 2 - 3 days, while the larger projects can take up to a week or two.

Grading:  My grading policy is as follows:

Projects: 100 points

Quizzes: 50 points

Exams: 100 Points

Mega-Projects 200 points

Journal - 50 per check.

To earn a specific grade, students must apply themselves to each area an complete assigned work.  The largest indicator of participating in class will be Journal work.  Will enter information everyday in our journals.  It is very important that students keep up with journals and homework in order to benefit from a grade that reflects their work.

90 - 100% = A

80 - 89% =  B

70 - 79% =  C

Below 70% = F

I do no give D's since in reality this is simply another failing grade.  All students have the capacity and opportunity to earn at least an average grade.

Classroom behavior:  I believe in a productive and disciplined environment that allows students to explore, question and develop problem solving and thinking skills that will last them a lifetime.  I will do my very best to nurture this climate.  As such, disruptions and behavior that challenge the good order of the classroom will be dealt with in a fair and expedient manner.

A couple of notes about Mr. Combs to help you avoid a negative experience in the classroom, or perhaps extra time outside of the classroom in the form of detention.  (ugh!)

  1. I do not compete with others when teaching.  Meaning: Learning requires preparation, especially listening.  I will listen to you and you will need to listen when I give instructions in order to have the best possible chance of excelling in my class.
  2. The bell is simply an indicator of time, do not rush up and out of your seats upon hearing it.  Most pets can be trained to answer a bell!  We, however, are future leaders of this country and are capable of behavior on a much higher plane.  I will dismiss the class when we are prepared.
  3. Language is the vessel of communication, and will be used to convey important and relevant thoughts and information.  Obscene or vulgar language will be dealt with in a swift and harsh manner.
  4. Chivalry, the act of courtesy and honor towards another, is encouraged and will often be rewarded.  Respect is the foundation where we can all involve ourselves in learning.

Discipline Philosophy:  When needed, I believe discipline should be uncomfortable, as uncomfortable as possible.  I will often make special effort to customize individual detentions to ensure that the right signal is being sent: i.e. that misbehavior is not appreciated.
